The Best Market in Cambridge
This past weekend, on my way to Open Studios in Somerville, I walked past Savenor's Market on Kirkland Street. The display looked impressive and I decided to explore. Compared to some of the giant gourmet markets in NYC, it's pretty small, but they seem to carry everything you'd need. I was particularly impressed because a day earlier, I had explored a "gourmet" market in Back Bay that looked more like a messy deli. Savenor's has restored my faith in Boston gourmet markets.
The market was founded by Lithuanian immigrants in 1939, they became the favorite grocer for Julia Child. Items that intrigued me during my brief tour were fresh duck foie gras, duck eggs, kangaroo meat, rabbit, poussin, and of course, imported Italian spelt pasta. The brand they carry isn't quite as delicious as the brand BuonItalia in NYC carries and it's only semi-whole grain, but it's pretty tasty. Here are their locations:
