Alcohol Consumption in Turkey

Although this blog is about food, alcohol is often paired with food, which makes the prices of alcoholic beverages in Turkey interesting. Turkey has a high consumption tax on alcohol. In fact, it is so high that the Turkish Daily News last month reported that the consumption tax paid by consumers of alcoholic beverages and tobacco is 91 times higher than the corporate tax paid by the producers said goods.

According to a local source, the alcohol consumption tax is above 100%! This tax is higher than all European countries with the exception of Sweden. If you can avoid drinking while you're in Turkey, my opinion is that your money can be better spent on other wonderful things here.
